Harness the power of interactive charts in Notion

If you're not familiar with QUERY, don't worry. In May 2023 we launched Chart Builder, AI Chart Assistant, and Structured Sheets to help you create charts from Notion databases more easily.

One of GRID’s most exciting partnerships yet, our database integration for Notion is proving to be an ideal pathway to possibility for Notion users. For those who’ve been looking for a way to visualize data from their Notion databases and embed it back into their Notion pages, this integration makes perfect sense. Notion users can build & embed incredibly layered, interactive documents with GRID, combining the best of data narration & visualization in one place.

Why is GRID excited to work with Notion?

As an all-in-one workspace for notes, tasks, & databases, Notion enjoys massive popularity among a devoted community of creators. With well over 30 million users worldwide as of July 2022, Notion has created a thriving space for young professionals to manage their projects and organize data, and offers the flexibility and customization options that a younger, cloud-savvy demographic demands.

Notion’s success is due in part to a vibrant community of early adopters attracted to the product’s clean, accessible user experience and freedom for personalization. A beacon in the landscape of community-led growth, Notion leverages the keen interest of its ambassadors to build social proof, showing the world why Notion is a great productivity tool for storing, organizing, and sharing information. Notion users demonstrate an almost endless array of use cases and advocate for the product’s potential as a personalized repository for all things related to creative task and project management.

So, what does GRID bring to the table?

GRID is one of the best available tools for visualizing and communicating numbers and calculations. We value simplicity, clarity, and ease of use – brand characteristics that appeal to many of the same users who call Notion home.

Additionally, both GRID and Notion are powerful no-code tools, proving how very inclusive and empowering no-code can be when it comes to serving a wide range of people with varying technical competencies.

As the numbers tool for a new generation, GRID’s goal is to help modern teams make fast work of the daily tasks that require analyzing, reporting on, and sharing numbers & calculations. Such work accounts for a tremendous expenditure of time and energy by knowledge workers around the globe – the same people who often struggle to effectively communicate key data stored in spreadsheets and databases.

For Notion users, this can mean not being able to fully utilize information in databases or being stuck with static data in reports or other projects. That’s where GRID can help. We want Notion users to discover how easy it is to turn data into dynamic charts and interactive calculators with GRID – to explore interaction elements like sliders, checkboxes, and input fields, and gain proficiency in our tool. By uniting GRID with Notion, users can truly maximize the communicative potential of their data.

With an ever-expanding range of accepted data sources including (but not limited to) spreadsheets, Airtable bases and Notion databases, GRID offers users an increasingly personalized experience. We meet you where your work is. And of course, getting started in GRID means selecting data to work with! Read our guide to learn how to connect your Notion database to GRID in a few simple steps.

Take your data even further

So, what can you do with GRID’s Notion database integration, you may ask? Let’s take a look at the kind of projects you can create once you’ve connected your database.

This interactive forecast uses data from a Notion database connected to GRID. It’s visualized in GRID and embedded back into a Notion workspace as an interactive document. The interplay between interaction elements like sliders and input fields allows viewers to explore and uncover multiple possible scenarios in just a minute or two. You can play with the values, and see the outcomes in the doc change instantly. To learn how to use some of GRID’s most popular interaction elements, take a look at our blog on engaging interactive features.

GRID supports a large number of the same functions you’d expect to find in Excel and Google Sheets. One of the most powerful of these in this context is the QUERY function, which you can use to group, aggregate and order your data. It’s useful if you’d like to reorganize your columns alphabetically, for example.

As of May 2023, a fantastic alternative to QUERY is our Chart Builder. Chart Builder summarizes your Notion data for you so you can skip using QUERY to group, filter, and aggregate, and thus manipulate your Notion data more easily.

We built this Sales Dashboard template with the Chart Builder, using data from a Notion database. This dashboard gives us a nuanced view of the data for each sales rep according to our selections. Our Chart Builder makes for an incredibly streamlined building process, so you can create more detailed visualizations in less time.

Another powerful feature for Notion users is Structured Sheets, a distinct sheet & interface in GRID that organizes your data in columns with headers. Notion and Airtable users can now more easily work with tabular data in a format that offers stronger querying capabilities and aggregations to better communicate the richness of the data. Note that this feature doesn't allow for interactive elements to directly reference the sheet.

If you’re intrigued, and you’ve got a Notion database to work with, it’ll only take a minute to get connected to GRID. GRID + Notion opens the door to massive possibilities for those who want to create and share engaging, data-driven projects with the world. Ready to try it out? Let’s go :)
