Bringing spreadsheets into the AI-first era

Introducing GRID's new mission The current wave of AI is arguably the biggest shift in user interfaces since the advent of the GUI. Meanwhile, spreadsheets remain a cornerstone of the business world — resilient, ubiquitous, and indispensable despite repeated predictions of their demise. The fusion of AI and spreadsheets is poised to be big, but it requires a fundamental rethinking — not bringing AI to traditional spreadsheets, but reimagining spreadsheets and their workflows for the AI-first era. With a unique set of cutting-edge spreadsheet technologies, GRID is uniquely positioned — and determined — to lead this transformation. AI-First The AI-first paradigm is defined by three key characteristics: Language-oriented: We interact with computers in our language, not theirs. Task-centric: Work starts with the task at hand, not the hunt for the right software. Agentic: Computers will act on our behalf, even when we’re not there. Spreadsheets Spreadsheets are not just tools; they are foundational to modern business: Ubiquitous: Over 1 billion users worldwide rely on them. Empowering: As the original low-code solution, they enable business users to solve problems independently. The fabric of business: Spreadsheets likely hold more business logic and data than any formal IT system. Bringing them together With the world’s most advanced independent spreadsheet engine — designed for lightning-fast performance and seamless compatibility with Excel and Google Sheets — and a suite of other powerful spreadsheet technologies, GRID is uniquely positioned to redefine the future of spreadsheets in an AI-first world. We’re bridging the gap between AI and spreadsheets, delivering the reliable and verifiable calculations that AI solutions currently lack. Bringing spreadsheets to ChatGPT Today, we’re taking a major step forward by expanding the Alpha testing of our ChatGPT solution and opening registrations for early access. GRID closes $12M in Series A funding round led by NEA

We’re thrilled to announce that we have closed a $12M Series A funding round led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), with participation from our existing investors BlueYard Capital, Slack Fund, Acequia Capital and other strategic partners! This funding will enable us to bring GRID to market and power accelerated product development. ‍ For more information see our press release. GRID closes $3.5M seed funding

We are thrilled to share some great news with you: We just closed $3.5M in seed funding! The investment is led by BlueYard Capital, with participation from strategic investors such as Slack Fund, Acequia Capital and angel investor Charlie Songhurst. We are happy to work with this group, as they add a lot of value to our mission other than their funding. Needless to say, they deeply believe in our mission to empower people to turn any spreadsheet into a beautiful web report, dashboard or interactive application. After our private Alpha launch a few weeks ago, we are now all heads-down again working on product, strategy, network expansion and go-to-market planning. This investment - on top of our $1M angel round in October - fuels current plans well into 2021. It gives us breathing room to focus on building the initial version of our product, take it to market and grow it from there - by delighting our users. We will be adding a few people to our team in the coming weeks and months. This is a fantastic opportunity to join an exciting startup at an inflection point. Take a look at our open positions, and keep an eye on our tweets.

The way we interact with spreadsheets is changing

SPAI-Conversation

Spreadsheets are the backbone of the business world, trusted by over a billion people to model, calculate, and analyze. As the original low-code tool, they empower business users to solve problems independently. As a result, spreadsheets likely contain more business logic and decision-making infrastructure than any formal IT system.

But as we move into an AI-first world, the way we use spreadsheets has to evolve.

We believe that to truly make spreadsheets AI-ready, you have to think beyond the idea of embedding task-specific assistants into traditional spreadsheet software. Instead, the spreadsheet itself needs to be reimagined — its logic and calculations made accessible through natural language, enabling automation, AI agents and multi-agent workflows.

In other words: it’s not about AI in spreadsheets. It’s about spreadsheets for AI.

That’s why at GRID, we’ve been building some of the foundational components for AI-native spreadsheets: a fast, cloud-native spreadsheet engine, accessible via API, and a visual layer for building interactive tools. Together, these components come together in our vision for a natural language interface for spreadsheets.

Unlocking the language of numbers

What if working with data didn’t involve endless fiddling with cells and formulas? What if you could simply ask your spreadsheet a question in natural language and get back accurate calculations, charts, or even interactive inputs allowing you to easily change variables?

Imagine spreadsheets as a dynamic, responsive workspace, where you can analyze, visualize, and model data simply by asking for what you want to explore.

This is the future we see. And we’re already building towards it.

What we’ve built

A headless spreadsheet engine, optimized for integration

At the core of our suite of spreadsheet technologies is the GRID spreadsheet engine — a fast, browser-native spreadsheet engine fully compatible with Excel and Google Sheets, designed to run complex models at scale and integrate seamlessly into custom applications and AI systems.

It delivers the reliable, verifiable calculations that AI solutions demand, and powers both of our available products (GRID API and Calculator Studio) as well as our showcase of a natural language interface.

By analyzing labels and context, the engine enriches spreadsheets with language data, making it possible for AI to interpret, reference, and interact with spreadsheet logic in meaningful ways.

Spreadsheet API for AI, automation and custom apps

The GRID API turns spreadsheets into web services, effectively transforming them into backends for custom applications, AI assistants, and automated workflows.

You can query a connected spreadsheet and interact with its logic in real time. Calculations happen without modifying the original file, so you can change input values and run multiple scenarios from the same model.

Whether you’re building tools, features or AI workflows, the API gives you reliable access to trusted spreadsheet logic and calculations and helps save time as developers can focus on knowing what functions to call instead of rebuilding the business logic as a custom app.

Calculator Studio: Turn spreadsheets into interfaces

We also built Calculator Studio, a no-code, WYSIWYG editor for creating interactive web tools powered by spreadsheets.

It’s perfect for turning your spreadsheet models into public-facing calculators, estimators, and configurators — without ever touching code. Once published, they update automatically when your underlying spreadsheet does.

Together, these pieces lay the groundwork for something new: a spreadsheet you can talk to.

Talk to your spreadsheet

Beyond what’s publicly available today, we’ve also been experimenting with what we believe to be the future of spreadsheet interaction: natural language interfaces.

We’ve connected our engine to a chat interface that lets you ask questions, build charts, tweak models, and update datasets, all using plain language.

Want a profit chart by product category? Just ask. Want to simulate changes in future revenue? Slide a control or run a goal-seek. Need new input data from a PDF? Drop it in — the system will extract the values and update your model in real time. Here’s a short demo of what our natural language interface looks like in action:

Spreadsheets aren’t going away any time soon. They’re just getting a whole lot smarter and GRID has built the engine that can power them with confidence and speed.
